Weekend Highlights

Calypso has been wired for music since she was born. The ONLY way I could get her to sleep as a baby was to hold her tight and sing to her. (Given that my singing voice could peel paint the case could be made for sleep being her mode of escape.) At 6 months she'd pull herself up and bounce in time when music was playing. She has played violin, piano, clarinet, and oboe. Each teacher was blown away by her ear. She doesn't play guitar....yet....but when I used to take lessons she'd go damn near out of her mind listening to me trying to tune up. She has wanted to take voice lessons for years but was advised to wait until a certain age so as to not damage vocal chords. She's been taking voice for 2 months and her teacher tells me she's coloratura material. I didn't even know what the heck that meant until I googled it. I do know when I heard this on Friday night I welled up.

  1. Wow, she's AWESOME! I see an "American Idol" bid in her future; you can start getting ready to smack Simon right now! ;-)

So, she didn't inherit your voice... but she was fortunate to receive your stunning good looks and one out of two ain't bad!

Congratulations, proud mama. I love it when your chest swells with pride!! ;-)

  2. It's kind of freaking me out to see your face on somebody else's head.

She's so lovely--and how appropos that she's wreathed in colors like that, being Your Calypso and all.

You only "welled up"? No sobbing ball on the floor business?

  6. apj, the song is called "Let Me In." It's from a movie called "Rigoletto." (no, not exactly the same as the opera)

  18. Lime:

Thanks for stopping by my place and entering the contest. If you win, don't let Calypso hear the 10 (crummy) CDs, otherwise whatever talent she has may be obliviated.

I had great respect for those Sixers teams, by the way. Great games whenever the Celts and Sixers met. Do you know how much respect we had for them? When Philly beat us in game 7, to go to the Finals, we chanted "Beat LA" because we respected them, that's how much it was. One of the great moments to be proud of as a Celtics fan.

  23. That IS my biggest fear...having to sing in front of an audience. Of course...I don't sound even remotely as nice as Calypso either.

  24. I like that part of fairy tales too! :-) She is teh awesome just like her mom, just in a different way. Mom peels paint, she'll break glass. In a good way. Heh.

Awww Lime, thanks for sharing this treasurers moment with us! She is so talented and really I think it was wise of you to wait, but for sure now its the time!
How lovely that she wants to take this lessons and develop her voice then - good to know she has a Mom like you to support her!

  26. That was a real treat.
I hope that she enjoys a fairytale like life.
Someone who sings as sweetly as that ought to be given the chance to put smiles on peoples faces.

    P.S.

Keep her away from the guitar, ya!

    lol

  27. beautiful.
    can she join my band?
    :)
    thanks so much for sharing!

ps: check out more of griffin house; you won't be disappointed.

pps: I reread the 55 etc. I had to laugh... more in a bit.

  28. just beautiful Lime!
    that was a challenging tune,
    pitch-wise and melodically,
    and she was not only
    so calmly composed,
    she was able to look
    straight into her audience's
    eyes, and really communicate
    with them...she is very very
    talented! a beautiful singer...
you can tell she loves music too...
    she's so natural with it.
    you must be very proud!
ps i have never heard of
    that word coloratura!
    very interesting!
    and being that versatile
    gets you more gigs
    when you're able to handle
    more ranges like that...
