Slice of Lime-Smoothie Operator

I love fruit smoothies. I make them all the time. Here we have the makings of a papaya, strawberry, lime smoothie. Mmmm, look at that color! It's like tie dyed food!


And if you know anything about me you know I love to dance around my kitchen. So as I was making smoothies and wondering what to do for this week's Slice of Lime I hit "shuffle" on my iPod and what should happen to come on but Sade's Smooth Operator.


So I shimmied and sashayed around the kitchen as the fruits whizzed around the blender and I giggled as I thought of a different set of lyrics for the song.

Yes, I know I am a very unwell person. My apologies to the lovely and talented Sade for throwing her lyrics into the blender. My apologies to any of you who attempt the following recipe which I am updating and tweaking from 3 years ago on an old blog.


Papaya-Limeberry Smoothies

3 or 4 cups frozen Papaya chunks (6 months in the freezer is minimally accepted time, ignore the freezer burn)

2 cups strawberries

juice of one lime

1 wooden spoon

-Add the unthawed papaya chunks, strawberries, and lime juice to a blender. Hit puree.
-Insert wooden spoon through opening in blender lid and push ingredients to blade.
-Notice this is not helping.
-Turn off blender, shift ingredients around, and repeat 2 previous steps.
-Become impatient. Stop blender and really smash fruit chunks into blades. Hit puree.
-Continue smashing fruit into blades with wooden spoon (be sure to hit the blades several times) until desired consistency is achieved.
-Turn off blender and pull out spoon. Notice large chunks of spoon missing.
-Consider dumping it all down the drain. Remember there are children starving in Africa (not to mention that we are standing on a precipice gaping into the wide open maw of a looming economic depression ourselves...you can thank me later for the cheery, uplifting tone of this recipe).
-Strain the smoothie through a sieve to remove larger splinters of spoon.
-Pour smoothie into a glass and enjoy.
-Notice there are still several visually detectable specks of wood.
-Tell yourself this too shall pass.

  2. Sounds like me everytime I try to use our blender. Maybe because it's from the 1980's?

    I may be the only person on the planet who doesn't like smoothies. But I don't like milkshakes or ice cream either, so I'm a strange one indeed.

    Molly is a world-class smoothie operator. Strawberries, raspberries, mangoes, bananas, blueberries, yogurt, etc, etc, depending on what she's got on hand at the moment, and what her taste buds are craving.

    And I just get to come along for the ride. . .

    I am sure wooden fiber is actually healthy. I do something similar with mangos and lime, and then put them into my ice cream maker (which by the way is as flawed as a blender, so don't buy one).
