R.I.P., Beulah

Beulah, the Minivan of Love 2000-2009

She carried around a family of 5 for the last 9 years. In addition, she helped taxi many friends of the family when needed. She made several trips to Georgia, 2 trips to Massachusetts, and countless trips to schools, sporting events, grocery stores, doctor's offices and other destinations. She logged over 107, 000 miles.
Beulah is survived by Jezebel the pick-up and Thelma the motorcycle.
She is mourned by the family she so faithfully served.

  1. My kids used to give names to our cars. I think it started back with our first minivan, which was woefully underpowered; so when it would struggle going uphill, I would cajole it onward, saying, "C'mon, Bessie Sue!" So my kids just figured that 'Bessie Sue' was its name. So when we got a full-size van, they dubbed it 'Big Bertha', and when I got a little, dark-green Geo Metro, it became 'Little Larry' (I suppose because it was cucumber-colored, and the 'L-L' bit was cutely alliterative). . .

    107k in 9 years. . . that's not too bad. I'm sure you'll miss her. . .

And, uh. . . yer pickup is named 'Jezebel'? Is there a story to tell there?

  2. Are your mini van days over?? Funny how we get attached to motor vehicles, isn't it? Must be all the time spent in them.

    Hope you are feeling better.

  3. Oh and don't forget that trip to Elkton last year... *sniff* *sniff*... Oh, I'm just no good with memorials.

I'm wondering if I should give my van a name...Um, maybe its not a good idea to get too attached. However we do call my husbands Corolla 'The Zippy Car.'

  4. I call my car the WIXYmobile.

I had a 96 Dodge Caravan that had got T-Boned when my wife pulled into someone. We got it fixed, but transmission troubles caused us to get rid of it. We had to start making car payments, which I really hated.

  5. Ooooooooh. Roddy The Wondercar had to step outside to barf after looking at poor Beulah. May the Good Lord have mercy upon her automotive soul.

  6. I think this is all a plot to get you a new Lexxus.

  7. Godspeed, Beulah. Please say hello to my dearly departed Chevy Cavalier, taken out by a utility truck who didn't have the right of way at a four-way stop intersection, but was driven by a man who insisted he did.

    He didn't!

I'm sure you two will be good friends!

  8. Nah, whaddya mean . . . that's totally fixable . . . a flesh wound . . . [brief interlude for nonsensical, yet vaguely-related Monty Python skit] . . . "The hood's bashed in, ya bastard!!" . . . "What? No it isn't" . . . "I'll have yer bumpah" . . . "Come on, ya pansy" . . . [aaaaand, scene!]

A little duct tape, bend that hood down flat, push those little trash baggies back into the dash, and Bob's your uncle, you're back on the road. Doesn't even look like a headlight's broken.

Missing you, but glad you're safe and sound, dearie.

    XO

  10. Poor Beulah. So how are you doing? (I'm asking genuinely, not like Joey from Friends.) My prayer is that all who are affected would be gifted from on High with compassion and understanding. Do you think this has had any impact (no pun intended) on your concussion?

  12. Michelle, my thoughts and prayers are going out to you this afternoon as you deal with everything that has happened. Unfortunately, bad things always come when we a) least expect them and b) seemingly can't take much more. But it's a test...it's a test of how well you can handle it. Hopefully, you make it through this in the best way you know how.

  13. I'm so sorry to see Beulah suffer! My sincere sympathy... we too name our cars. The one I have now is called "The Clown Car" because it's mini-compact that carries 4 huge boys and mom. It runs on curses and prayer. I will be devastated when she goes! So many memories in there. Sigh.

Something will come up... it always does. I'll put it on my list for you. :) I hope that you are feeling better, Lime.

  18. I continue to send you happy thoughts.
And just what brought Beulah to Georgia?

  19. But if she kept all of her occupents safe, even during that crash, she should be celebrated! What a gal.

  33. My condolences to you and your family and the car lot in which she came from. No doubt there are many a mini vans sobbing windshield wiper fluid as we type. Must be a most wretched sight.

Like your "about me." I am almost 40, still trying to figure out what to be when I grow up, but bucking that whole grown up thing too.

    Found you through beach bum.

  34. Is it cruel to be thinking of names for the new vehicle before this one is even cold?

If not, I think the next vehicle should be a male and he should be called 'Bosephus'... Of course, you can't really name it until you see what it looks like.
    :-)

  35. I'm just back again, another day, to say I'm really thinking of you.

  36. Beulah did her job and saved your life. She protected you when you needed it. She served you well. Nobody can control hydroplaning, it can happen to anyone at any time the roads are wet and we fool ourselves into thinking we can beat it. I haven't been in for a while because thing have been really hoppin here but I read and caught up and am so grateful that you weren't injured worse then you were. My condolences on the loss of your beloved Beulah, but I am thankful that my condolences are not going to your family instead!!

  37. Dear Lime, As bad as it all has been sounding as of late... I never really worried about you. You are a strong woman. Although I did not have the time to type a response, I kept an eye on you. Your writing remained clear, well thought out and detailed... the body and soul... like a good martini... shaken.... but not stirred!!!

I'm going off to play with the bears for a month... but I look forward to coming back and reading about all the new adventures you are sure to have!!! Stay safe.

btw. We had a VW for 18 years. And loved it. The old Car became in a way a Family member. Hehe.
Then my Son had it for 2-3 years.
It did it's job for 3 generations of humans.
