Friday 55-Late February

 *image from here

Disoriented
by a break in the bitter cold,
only to be surprised by a sudden snow storm,
a songbird titters away confusedly
searching for her absent mate.

Disarmed and thawed
by a cessation in hostilities
before the cold war resumed,
a woman laughs nervously
when an acquaintance asks why
he hasn't seen her husband lately.

  1. Limey...
    I loved this Wintery Tale.
    Loved your 55 too.
I know the stress is your life right now so I really appreciate this excellent contribution.
Thanks again, and have a Kick Ass Week-End...G

  3. Very telling parallel drawn between the stanzas. "Disarmed and thawed /
by a cessation in hostilities" love those lines. Great 55

  5. So intriguing! I wonder what the connection might be between the two stanzas.

  8. Oh yeah. I certainly can relate to the bird and her counterpart. Very disorienting and also tiring going through those climatic and climactic changes. Excellent 55. I liked you fly rednecks, too. Hilarious with the orange cap and the Dominacans.

  9. Having unusual warm weather down here, some of the trees have even started to bloom. We have at least one more good cold snap left, don't know how the trees will do.

This depresses me on several levels, namely that my wife is talking about starting yardwork again.

  10. This is nicely done. That nervous laughter is the icing on the cake. I also enjoy the idea that perhaps the missing spouse is terminally absent, but that's probably just my nefarious mind at work.
    Here is mine: Bacon-fat gravy

  11. Interesting, love the nervous laughter -- many good lines here in a mere 55 economy of words. Hitchcock would love this.

  12. if I were to write this one last weekend...

    "Disoriented
by a buttload of beer last night
    I want to throw up
why is that bird so loud.
I hate birds in their stupid
    bird faces.
Too scared of pooping the bed
    to fart"

  20. oh, not a nice place for mama bird to be. Here's hoping her mate shows up with something better than excuses to show for his absence.

  21. Mm, an interesting poem Michelle. Sounds like the hubby left because of a row? Not quite the same as the bird. I enjoyed its photo though - Dave
