Friday 55& Da Count-Snow

Trapped beneath this mountain of snow and ice
I wait anxiously for my rescuers to release me.
Will they succeed or will they send tons more of white powder
crushing down around me and over themselves?
They painstakingly carve away at the mass which entombs me.
Finally I emerge to sun and breathe fresh air.

Yes, I know some of you will think I am sick in the head for counting snow. Last winter was so pathetic though. There was barely any snow and what little fell was not even good to play in. It was just slushy slop. From the end of November to before the solstice we already had more of a winter than all of last year. Once the trees are stripped of their leaves and the grass turns brown we need some snow to beautify the place. I love the way a fresh blanket of it sparkles in the sun and makes everything look clean. One of the most peaceful things is to take a walk at night as the snow falls softly around you. The whole world seems still and quiet, as if someone shushed us then reached out and made the Earth spin a little more slowly. Aaaaahhh......

I only just experienced my first snow. I wondered if I would appreciate it more, since I was a first-timer, but all of my neighbors came out to enjoy it. It was like a block party. It was really fun to watch.

A great 55, and a fab picture!

aaahhh.... indeed. We get fog here... snow is 45 minutes away though and I do like it when I get there.

Oh yeah... 8 PM my time... though it's supposed to storm big time so I guess it's me and a movie or tow.

Very few things as peaceful as a heavy snowfall at night. The quiet is staggering...great 55. remind me someday to tell you my "escape to the poconos in the snow" story...

Much as I hate to admit it, what with all my normal grumping, complaining, whining, pissing and moaning about how much I hate winter, fresh-fallen snow is really beautiful, isn't it? Dressed for the occasion, doesn't snow just kind of reach out and grab you and make you want to throw yourself down in it, wave your arms and make "snow angels?" Walking in the snow, in the moonlight - yep, it's really a beautiful sight and experience, for sure and I do like it then - just don't make me have to drive in it.

Out here in Chicago, the first snowfall is fantastic...but then the ice follows and more snow, and the bitterness......then you come to hate it very fast. Faster if you have to drive in it.

But awesome 55!

The silence of snow is truly a magical experience.

I do miss the snow at times and this is one of them. Bright blue skies, crisp air and fresh, white and pure snow...glistening everywhere. Last year when I was in WI it was what you described above...the gray slop...UGH!!

Hope you have a great wknd ;o)

Probably I told you this before... but we haven't had proper (I mean long lingering anything like deep) snow since I was literally NINE years old and I'm 35 now that is 1981... so don't get too het up about snow... sometimes even in supposedly bad-weathered Britain it might be nice actually properly to HAVE some sometime...

I love snow, but not ice. We used to get lots of snow. Not now for some reason.

Great 55. Never saw much snow growing up in South Carolina and once I was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado I quickly had my fill in just a few months. But one time while during a field training exercise in a snow storm I was in a foxhole pulling guard duty and the blowing snow and white landscape developed a beauty a I found surreal.

We are desperate for a bit of the white stuff too. Got a good dumping the first of december and nothing since. Tomorrow is suppose to be in the 40's, no luck there. Enjoy the weekend!

A few days before Christmas we had a lovely snowfall and I walked to the beauty shop. Hardly a soul was out in our little community. I got to crunch in fresh snow the whole way. The sun had come out. I felt radiant and peaceful.

P.S. I didn't mean to end my comment yet. I'm on my daughter's laptop and it's so easy to make a false move. What I was about to say is: I'm adding you to my blogroll so I can keep up with you.

Well, snow makes water and water is good so yeah, count it!

Mr Ratburn is off to Seattle to fetch Little Rita and I am off to Delhi in a few hours!

Loved your HNT Lime! SO awesome.

You like what you like, no one can take that from you. I'm partial to the warmth of my native region. Great 55.

When I was little we lived in TN and I loved the snow and would walk in it at night. Here, no snow just wet bone creeping and chilling cold that once it gets in, is just about impossible to defrost. When it does happen to snow here once in a blue moon, its lovely and actually warmer. Enjoy your snow :)

michelle- I've always enjoyed fresh falled snow, everything is so pure and beautiful at that very first moment. So peaceful too. Now that snow sculpture is amazing!

You know how I feel about the white stuff. I totally agree with you about it making the world more beautiful.

Unfortunately, ours is melting as we speak. I'm not looking forward to the mud that will be left in it's tracks.

Have a great weekend!

Ahhh, snow. I've always thought it must be almost mystical to look out of a window to see it. We do have it here; it's even snowed in the backyard of the B's. Not much, I'll grant you, not more than a couple of centimetres.

And thanks for the cool thoughts on a day when we're expecting 34C/93F.

Hey Lime :)

I could not agree more. We totally went out sledding today so we could enjoy our wet packed down inches before they melt. I hate winter, but I LOVE snow--just for all the same reasons everyone else does. Cold weather is just so much more tolerable with snow.

I loved your pic meme too--I especially laughed about your house! :D

Have a great week!

All our snow is melting in 40-degree temperatures. Thank God, because I've got a nasty ice dam on my roof.

Wonderfully refreshing to see someone count snow! Three cheers for the white stuff (of which we just lost in my neck of the woods due to some stupidly high Jan temperatures and rain -- sigh)

And, as always (though I often don't pause to comment) fantastic 55!
