Slice of Lime-Put De Lime in de Coconut

A week or so ago, maybe more, I shared the wonders of coconut water on a hot day in the tropics. Here's a common scene from around the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain. There are several trucks with the bed full of coconuts. Guys with big machetes sell them cheaply and expertly hack off the top in quick order.

Since I was a tourist he handed me a straw for my drinking pleasure but most folks would drink it straight from the nut. As a bonus you get a rare picture of me with very short hair....which is a story in itself.

We want the short hair story.

Coconuts are so versatile, aren't they? I like the Thai dishes that are made with coconut milk. . .

Is this the short hair that was the result of an episode of lice?

(*shudder*)

Been there, done that; no fun. . .

Coconut and summertime....how refreshing that sounds right now!

That must have really hit the spot to drink. Since it was a hot day, was the milk warm inside? I know it sounds like a weird question, but...

That coconut looks good. I just passed on a can of coconut milk in the market. Was debating making a curry tonight but decided I wasn't in the right mood.

Strangely, I was thinking of you there. My son asked if there was such a thing as Lime soda. I told him I thought there was and headed out to the Mexican market to see. I was going to just make it but you know kids... they look at anything like that with those wary jungle eyes. Maybe for myself, though. those Mexican sodas are awfully sweet.

Ok I am going to guess that you had to shave your head because you couldn't get the rows out that the ladies put in your hair while down there.
Other guess, head lice, no personal offense there, or at your pals, just a third world issue...

As for the coconut, as you know, I cannot ever be on Survivor because I am allergic to coconuts...but I always found it amazing that those coconut wallahs just hold that nut up and whack off the top..in India they give you the whacked off top to use as a scoop for that jelly stuff which, ew, I am sooo allergic to that jelly stuff as you know....

Great pic..am I right about the hair?

Coconut drink vendors are everywhere. I remember them from the beach in Dar Es Salaam when I lived there. Thanks for the warm memory and the photo of a much warmer place than here in Vancouver today.

Just out of curiosity, what was the going price for a decapitated coconut?

Fresh coconut is the only kind I like.

When I was a kid one of my dad's customers used to send us coconuts. I have fond memories of watching my dad whack holes in them and sitting on the porch with my brother and sisters sipping away. There is nothing like fresh coconut! Then we would smash the empty nut with a hammer and nibble on the pieces for the meat. Good stuff!

The short hair is cute, and this looks like a good experience. I really like Coconut, wish they had more of them in Norway ;-)

Actually, wouldn't it be more appropriate to say, 'Put de Coconut in de Lime'?

;)

(WordVer = 'coccon'; I am not making this up. . .)

I can't remember where it was but I heard someone talking about making cheese from a coconut. Lime, does that make any sense?

jazz, i'll think about it.

craig, i love thai food with coconut milk

cocotte, doesn' tit though?

michelle h, the green nuts like i was drinking have water inside and no it wasn't warm. i think the thickness of the nut kind of insulates it from the heat

cricket, it was very refreshing. i'm giggling that i came to mind when in pursuit of lime soda.

s, the short hair was not a third world related issue. you can't have coconuts, i can't have bananas, what a pair eh?

voyager, glad to bring yo ua warm smile on a cold day :)

ttfootball, yeah i always wondered abuot the cold nuts too.

furiousball, smart man!

suldog, well the picture was about 8 years ago. i wouldn't swear to it but at the time i think it was maybe around $1 US

gman, huh???

secret agent, yummy, no?

ananda, fun memory!

diane, i'd imagine coconuts are not terribly common in norway!

craig, good point

beach bum, that is not a thing i have ever heard of regarding coconuts
