Hats Off-American Version

After the royal wedding I made fun of the silly hats worn by guests.  This weekend the Kentucky Derby was run so I get to have a go at my own countrymen and women now.  Let's get right to it shall we?  Our first model seems to be trying to camouflage herself either as jungle foliage or a bird.  I dunno, but this hat on head is worth a bird in the bush I think.

Speaking of birds, I think an ostrich is trying to hatch Kate Gosselin's head.

Though this next hat doesn't strike me as outlandish it does look kind of like it came from the Moammar Qadaffi collection.

Again with the birds on one's head.  I mean I guess it's less disturbing than vuvlas but only marginally ya know, being a bird and all...

This fellow's chapeau leaves nothing for interpretation.  Actually I think it would be kind of groovy if the roses were on top and the horses were on a track racing around his brim.  I mean if you're going to be outlandish let's really go for broke...

Ya know, sort of like this gal.  Go big or go home.  In this case go gargantuan!  Does she carry a steamer trunk as a purse too?

No vulvas?

Oh, those uptight, sexually-repressed Americans. . .

And, as to birds and bushes, I can only get in trouble with that, so I'll leave it to others. . .

;)

Women's hats just... I don't know. They have never made sense to me. More power to ya, and wear whatever you want - I'm a libertarian, after all - but at least I wear a hat for a purpose. I'm bald and my head gets cold/sunburned/dusty. Women have all that excellent hair and... Nope, don't get it.

I have refused to wear a hat of any kind since about age 10. I guess I'd be really boring at the Derby.

I will say one thing for the American hats over the English: it does seem that the majority of American hats cover the wearer's head. The royal proportions seemed exactly reversed. There's something in that, I'd say.

Of course, we have the woman in picture four, who is being pecked to death by some Martian pheasant. So we can't have everything.

(I hope you caught Dianne's Hats Off... over at Forks Off The Moment? )

I like a good hat. It's a look I can barely pull off. Sometimes I do okay with a baseball cap. I'd like to do something like a Fedora, though.

I think the guy with the roses and horses lost a bet. I'm just sayin'.
