Guilty Pleasures

A long time ago I did this brief post where I admitted to once owning Barry Manilow records, loving a soggy bowl of Count Chocula and Frankenberry mixed, and a few other embarassing facts. I encouraged readers to share their own cringe-worthy tastes. I have recently had to admit that I have developed a taste for another activity which makes me want to hang my head in shame.

We only got cable TV last December. Prior to that we never had it, thus the limelets, and by default their parents, were spared some of the more mind-numbing things avaialable on TV. Our darling progeny were weaned on the uplifting and educational shows found on PBS.

I must admit since we've gotten cable I have become a great fan of Mythbusters and Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs. I don't feel any shame in admitting I watch either of those shows. Mythbusters is educational as it either confirms or denies various urban myths and old wives tales. Dirty Jobs is a bit gross at times but you always learn something, sometimes you wish you hadn't but it's part of the charm. And let's face it, Mike Rowe is pretty darned funny as he verbalizes what we are all thinking about whatever vile slop he is wading through, not to mention he's not entirely unpleasant to look at even when he is covered in muck.

So what is my new guilty pleasure since acquiring cable TV? What do I watch and inwardly wince at my own bad taste? I can assure you it is none of the Disney Channel sitcoms aimed at the 8-13 year old set. Here and now I will ask to be kidnapped and reprogrammed for my own good if I EVER state a preference for one of those shows! So what is it?

Yep, I admit it. I like Spongebob Squarepants.

Now it's your turn to admit a guilty pleasure. Is it a mind rotting TV show? Kitschy decorations? Pseudo-food like Velveeta? Music by Air Supply? Out with it. Tell me your guilty pleasure.

Well, I would have to say Prince is my guilty pleasure. Not exactly a "Manly man's" sound, but I do love his musical stylings. Having said that, if there are other guys in my vehicle or at the house, the purple one stays tucked safely away...

I'm currently in love with William Petersen who plays Gil Grissom on CSI. He's so damn cute!

Spongebob is hard to look away from.

I'd like to publicly admit to my addiction to Bravo TV's Project Runway and Top Chef shows. I thought both would be horrible since I don't really care about fashion and really dislike most gourmet food.

Oh, then there's the really shameful, America's Next Top Model. I know, you think much less of me. *hangs head in shame*

BARRY MANILOW!!!!!??? OMFG!

What's shameful about Spongebob Squarepants? I've been a fan since day one, I have all of the shows on DVD and the movie too...I am currently looking forward to the new Spongebob movie with...gulp...David Bowie. I have Spongebob keyrings, mugs, a Spongebob shaped piggy bank and a heap of other stuff. I mean it's not as if it's Barbie or something.

My guilty pleasure is Postsecret, not a TV show I know, but still a guilty pleasure.

"Las Vegas" on free NBC TV... and I have also been known to catch missed episodes on their website.

Let me just hang my head and go sit in the corner for the rest of the day. ::sniffle::

I love Celine Dion and The Rightous Brothers -equally. TV -I am addicted to Law and Order, Homicide, Life on the Streets, Third Watch, DiVinci's Inquest - just can't find cable channels that carry all of them anymore -except the Law and Order, that is. And I do very much enjoy Dirty Jobs and Mike Rowe is pretty decent eye candy there too -plus, I love his voice!

I LOVE SpongeBob!

Sadly, I also like reality shows and now.....I hate to admit it but...I'm into Dexter. I know. I know. It's a show about a serial killer and he's the good guy. I'm not proud of it.

You have some impotant points here.
Whenwe first got cable TV - so exciting ---- but today, TV is push and push, after a rigid progran schedule.

My life now is a.o. reading your blog

And I try my best in my infantile english to entertain my blog friends - while my main purpose is to write for my 2 kids living abroad.

PS. Still some jetlags

While it drives Dragonwife absolutely bonkers, my daughter and I can spemd all day Saturday watching Spongebob.

My guilty pleasures:
I totally dig every aspect of Disneyworld. The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, the water park Typhoon Lagoon, and just about anything else. And yes I can ride "Its a small world" all day without getting sick over the song or the sickly sweet depictions of kids around the world. Plus, has anyone seen the huge amount of coins that people throw into the water while cruising around on the little boats?

OMG Not spongepants Squarebob! My Greek nieces used to love that and believe me being dubbed into Greek does not improve it any (no offence, but I was subjected to the yellow peril 24/7 on more than one visit to Greece) if I never see it again it will be way too soon! Save yourself Lime, pull out that cable!
As for my guilty pleasure it could be playing Harry Potter games on my computer...well, I have to keep up with my nieces in case they need help! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it LOL

Ok You know I LOVE Gary the Snail too (MEOWWW)

And I also Love Squidward, especially when he plays clarinet in his black speedo.

(M)ary said...

As the World Turns...another guilty pleasure which I can watch online.

barman said...

For me I suppose I have a lot of them but I will stick with one or perhaps two.

I like chick flicks. Not the real mushy ones but ones like You've Got Mail, Wedding Singer, Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones's Diary, Sleepless in Seattle, Never Been Kissed, 50 First Dates... Oh and I LOVE musicals too.

I will be sure to turn in my Men's Club card as I leave.

I'm still a big sucker and can't help singing along to Laura Branigan's 80's hit "Gloria" whenever I hear it. Oh, oh, I feel the song coming on right now:

Gloria,
Don't you think you're fallen
(Gloria)
If everybody wants you
(Gloria)
Why isn't anybody caaaalllin?
You don't have to answer
Leave them hangin' on the li-ine
Oh-oh-oh, callin' Gloria....

My guilty pleasure has been spending too much time online lately...

OMG...Sponge Bob...lol!!!

I love to watch Dirty Jobs as well and I just like watching Mike Rowe in general. Myth Busters is great. Those guys get paid to blow shit up! How cool is that?!?!

Another great channel to watch is National Geographic when they have Taboo. Some really strange stuff and you can't unglue yourself from the tube.

I like dipping my french fries in my chocolate malts...lol! Salty sweet maybe?

Hey Lime!

I listen to Wham! and Cyndi Lauper.

My cartoon guilty pleasure is Jane and the Dragon. And sometimes, VeggieTales--cause those are just plain funny! On the Saturday mornings we're home, I normally read blogs, make pancakes, and watch these two shows with the chilis.

My food guilty pleasure is McDonald's. I'm so ashamed of eating there and I rarely do cause it's really unhealthy, but sometimes I crack and let myself. I was too embarrassed to carry the bag into school the other day, so I hid it in my bookbag!! I need help.

:P

p.s. You're Spongetastic! :)

p.p.s. Me too, Mona, Me too!

I have seen Barry Manilow in concert...twice.

I actually DO watch "Dancing with the Stars"...online...after they've aired on network tv...'cause we don't put the tv on when the kids are awake, except, *cough cough*, for PBS and carefully-selected kid vids.

That Mike Rowe certainly is easy on the eyes!

I am currently without a TV guilty pleasure. Nothing has quite filled the void that 'Footballers Wives' left behind.

Grimstarr said...

I cannot believe I am about to tell you this. Dirty Jobs is awesome and Myth Busters too. I also have been sucked into watching *gulp* "I (heart) New York" on VH1 and "Drake and Josh" on Nickelodeon. I have also been known to watch the occasional Hannah Montana show. Spongebob RULEZ! I found another show on VH1 called "The Shot." It is a reality show about a bunch photographers vying to be the next fashion photographer a la "American Idol" or "Nashville Star." Oh, yeah, "American Idol" and you (of course) are also my other guilty pleasure. Love you dollface.

My guilty pleasure? Does picking a window seat at work so I could watch the women from the local offices walk past count?

If not, I guess it could watching "Neighbours", an Aussie soap.

I love the adult swim line up of cartoons on the cartoon network. My absolute favorite is Venture Bros. but of course I do always go back to my one true love--South Park.
