True Confessions

Here I thought the less than stylish hat and glasses combo would be the most disturbing aspect of the image in the previous post. It seems I caused greater consternation/revulsion with my bowl of Reese's Puffs, which several of you said looked like dog kibble. Admittedly, it may not look too tasty but it is peanut butter and chocolate flavors in one bowl. It's hard to go wrong with that combo in my mind.

That said I will admit to another awful preference which you may find even worse. I got the Reese's Puffs because my first choice was not available. What I was really hungry for was a giant bowl of Count Chocula mixed with Frankenberry sitting in the milk until it was a soggy mess. I'll pause while you consider that.

On the rare occasion I indulge in Oreos I like to dip them in milk and hold them there until they are almost soggy enough to disintegrate. When I was a kid I used to like too pen them, scrape out the icing, ball it up, and save it to eat until after I had eaten the cookies.

That was also the age at which I used to stockpile chewing gum...after I had chewed it. Listen, my mom was unbelievably stingy with gum. I was allowed half a stick of trident at a time. What is that, maybe three molecules of gum? HALF A STICK, PEOPLE! How was I going to work up a decent bubble with that paltry bit of gum? I was forced to horde my ABC gum. No, I didn't keep it on my bedpost. I am not going to publicly admit where exactly I stored it.

Now it's your turn. I want to hear what strange flavor combinations you enjoy. Don't make up something revolting just for this. I want actual weird things you eat for pleasure or weird food habits you engage in that cause other people to question your sanity. You need more examples? Ok, my stepfather likes ketchup on ham and I once knew a person who liked tuna mixed with maraschino cherry juice.

Now fess up, what weird things do you like?

For some reason chocolate and peanut butter induce copious shuddering on my part.

But one of my favourite comfort foods is a peanut butter sandwich with cream of tomato soup - or chicken noodle in a pinch. And it doesn't work with home made soup. It has to come from a can.

Peanut sandwiches. Not that weird but I love them!

I honestly can't think of anything weird. I mean, as a kid, I loved eating Cream of Wheat despite all the kids saying in art class that it looked like paper mache paste. Also, as a kid, I would take the used piece of gum I was chewing on, wrap it around a new piece of gum, and chew on both. But that's about it.

Peanut Butter and...
Bacon
Tuna fish mixed with Miracle Whip
Sliced Tomatoes
Onions
Bologna
Hot Dogs
Cream Cheese

Sausage sandwich with Mustard and Jelly

I like eggs over easy with my pancakes, so that the gooey yoke can intermingle with the syrup!

Enough for you?

I'm not sure about weird combinations, I'll eat just about anything, but usually in a standard manner. On the other hand, though I appreciate fine dining, I also have a taste for the lowbrow: Spam, Velveeta, Circus Peanuts... not all together, mind.

I eat oatmeal with butter, salt and pepper, not sure how weird that is. I occasionally eat french fries with mayo, blame that discovery on a trip to Germany. I've been known to buy canned octopus in garlic sauce and eat it over rice. Sounds stranger than it is.

When I was a kid, we would occasionally eat a Milk-Bone or two. Don't ask...

My general policy is, I'll try it if you'll take a bite first.

I don't have so many really-and-truly weird food fetishes. When I was a kid, I would go for the occasional mayonnaise sandwich. And if the right mood struck me, I would remove the crust from a slice of white bread, and mash it into a ball that was sorta like reverting to the original dough-ball. . . But those were when I was a kid, a looooong time ago. . . And I'll still, maybe once a year or so, soak graham crackers in milk until they're a soggy mush. . .

Jen and I celebrated New Year's with a bowl of oatmeal covered with Bailey's Irish Cream. But I imagine that, for at least a subset of your readers, that will sound pretty appealing. . . ;)

I had a jr-hi teacher who would roll all the gum he collected thru the school year into a ball, and the penalty for getting caught chewing gum in his class was to chew the whole ball. It was a remarkably effective deterrent (but, alas for some of my classmates, not foolproof. . .)

And FB, I don't like shit on my peanut-butter-banana-and-mayo sandwiches, either. . . ;)

When I was little... we'd take a sweet pickle and wrap a piece of sweet Lebanon baloney around it and eat... yummy!!!

When my kids were little... to your standard "fluff-a-nutter" (peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich) add banana slices and chocolate jimmies.... other wise known as a choco-nanna-fluff-a-nutter!!

Today...I like to make a salad of fresh spring greens with sliced almonds, shredded cheese and craisins... but then top it with two fried eggs... the heat of the eggs melts the cheese and when you cut the eggs the yolks act as your dressing!!!! Again... yummy!!!!

I'm getting hungry... good thing it is close to lunch time!!!

Turnip (rutabaga) sandwiches. Nobody else I know has ever eaten one. I made it up myself one day after a Thanksgiving. It's the yellow turnip, sometimes known as rutabaga, pureed/mashed/whipped, then slathered on some bread with perhaps a generous pinch of black pepper (a substantial white is good for the bread, but pumpernickel is better.)

My wife was grossed out when she saw me indulge in an old favorite from my childhood. I stacked about ten unsalted crackers with peanut butter between each, immersed the whole thing in a cup of coffee (cream and sugar) and ate it like oatmeal.

My favorite dessert: microwave peanut butter with Cheerios, so that it mixes thoroughly (pretzels work just as well), and then add a couple dollops of vanilla ice cream.

Oh, and the Elvis sandwich is good, too.

You hid your gum?? Did your classmates mistake it for a hearing aid?

I haven't had this in years, but it used to be a sublime taste treat: Sugar Babies and barbecue potato chips with a chaser of Dr. Pepper. Sadly, Dr. Pepper no longer has the proper tanginess. The new stuff is cloying and I need something that bites back after scarfing those babies and chips. What's a gourmet to do???

Just readng through the comments made me a little queasy. I don't think I have any - I don't really like tastes that don't go together - no chocolate-dipped pretzels for me, no sweet and sour sauce. But I do like this, which I invented one summer - bagel or a slice of french bread with cream cheese, kalamata olive spread, lox and tomato. Mmmm.

I'm not ashamed to admit my mother-in-law has gotten me hooked on Peanut butter & Bread n' butter pickle sandwiches with a slight slather of mayo.

SOOooooooo Good, but my kids think I'm insane!

I'm SO gonna try that cheerio, peanut butter and ice cream thing Craver... So much for the post-holiday diet!

My favorite is a take off on the Elvis sandwich. It is a sandwich of sliced bananas and mayo. Got hooked by my uncles as a kid and even now one of those with a Pepsi is almost heaven.

Okay... miracle whip and peanut butter sandwiches. Or mustard and pickle sandwiches. I don't know why I ever tried either, but I still like them.

soggy cereal, of any kind, makes me gag...

I'm with G-Man on PB and Bacon. You could grease a transmission with that sandwich. Makes my cardiologist faint...but mmmmm so good.

Also PB on banana bread....
My Mom used to put ketchup on scrambled eggs (ewwww)

As for single standing foods, there is nothing so vile as split pea soup, creamed chipped beef and liver. I'd rather eat sand.

You will hate this Lime....but I love mashed potatoes covered in saurkraut.

And now I want to try Craig's oatmeal!

Can't eat scrambled eggs without ketchup or at least screaming hot salsa.

Peanut butter & honey sammich - on rye bread.

Pork chops baked in sauerkraut with liberal dose of craisins mixed in.

A section of lime with a pimiento stuffed green olive. Stack 'em, stuff them in your mouth & chew. Tastes nothing like either thing you just put in your mouth and it's not totally disgusting either.

And what's wrong with that hat/glasses combo? I wear something like that to work every day!

I can't believe I'm coming up dry. Oh, wait: I haven't done this in years, but it used to be a staple back in my early 20's...I loved egg noodles with Ranch dressing as the "sauce." For health, I would sometimes add in a can of corn.

I like peanut butter and Cheerio sandwiches. As in, spread the peanut butter (creamy, not chunky) on the bread, then sprinkle on some Cheerios, then smush it together. Good with milk.

I like green beans with ketchup.

I know... ewww..

(how ironic is it that my wv is "intice". Spelled wrong...but still... weird!)

p.s. I like my oreos super soggy too. And I do the same thing with Chocolate Milano cookies. Mmmm.

Let's see....I love to smoosh sweet potato over turkey. Frosty from Wendy's with fries dipped in it. Chili with homemade caramel rolls dipped in it. Potato chips on any sandwich. not too strange on any of those I guess.
