Slice of Lime & Friday 55-Back to School

FRIDAY 55

Perfectly coiffed-check
Tastefully accessorized-check
Dressed for success-check
Enthusiastic attitude-check
Air of confidence-check
Alright, off I go to conquer the world and dazzle the masses.
Look at all these people!
I have to be where? When?

Gees, kindergarten is absolutely exhausting!

*Click the pic to make it big enough to fully appreciate the difference in the 2 shots. My mom tells the story of how I skipped off so confidently the first day of kindergarten and then trudged home completely wiped out. She only intended to take the 'before' picture but when she saw me coming home she ran for the camera to document the effects of the day in the 'after' picture.

The first day of school is so sweet and sad, all at the same time. before you know it, you'll be watching a high school graduation ceremony.

Love the little flashback moment.

This makes me laugh! I love that your mom thought to capture that moment. How absolutely telling and perfect!

Kindergarten IS exhausting. All that coloring and playground equipment and letters! Numbers! It's a wonder any of us make it out alive.

(nap time?)

Heh, heh. I read the original post at the time. Still love the before-and-after, though. That's classic.

If I remember right, I thought kindergarten was reasonably ok. After that, not so much. I sent my older off this week with a bit of a pang. He's like me: he does well but doesn't care for the concept in general.

His open house was last night. My wife was telling him how his teacher was going to grade him according to his ability... she always wanted her students to turn in their best work, &c. &c.

I really had to resist adding "so now is the time to set the bar low, before she gets to know you, so you can 'show great improvement' later on."

Of course, I think learning is important, but part of going to school is playing the game, and I learned how to play the game better than most.

A funny story: my kindergarten teacher called my mom toward the end of the year, all excited to tell her "Your child can read!" She thought Mom would be happy.

My irritated mother replied something like "He could read when he started. You're just figuring this out now?!?"

Ahh, the poignant disillusionment of our school years. I remember it well!

Another good'n, Lime!

I couldn't enlarge the image, but I love that before and after.

The pictures wouldn't enlarge, but even from here, I can see the exhaustion. It's our tradition, too, to take first day of school pictures. Great 55! MIne is here.

Ooops. The picture clicking doesn't work for me. I can still see the huge difference. You look so perky in one and so bedraggled in the other. Poor little puppy.

Great 55 capturing all the bravado of a 5-year old.

I just wonder if your kindergarten teacher's significant other happened to take a "before" and "after" photo set of her that day -- to see if little Ms. Lime exacted an equally taxing toll on her psyche! ;-)

As always, your exquisitely-written post conjured up nostalgic memories of "first days of school" gone by! You never cease to impress and entertain, Michelle!

Alright Lime, tell us the truth--you got to kindergarten and there was a hamster, wasn't there?

Much love to you and your family. Please know that the same psychotic chaos goes on at my house too, I just haven't had the energy to write about it. You always inspire me and I love coming here on a quiet weekend to catch up and share.

Here's to surviving another school year...

I loved that post the first time I read it and it was worth a revisit.
My favorite comment on my first report card was "Rebecca is a chatty child." I get it out and reread it when I want a laugh. Talk about a duh statement!
I think the most important thing I learned in kindergarten was that people did notice if you wear two different socks.
