Overheard at Work

A couple recent snippets...

I have a particular coworker, TherapyGirl who has some rather fussy eating habits.  She doesn't like strawberries or blueberries because they have itty bitty seeds, so you know raspberries are right out.  She won't eat caramel because she doesn't like how it coats her mouth.  She detests trail mix because all the ingredients touch each other.  She likes all the individual components of  nuts, dried fruits, seeds, chocolate bits.  She just hates them mixed.  Ditto for other mixes like Chex Mix even though , again, she likes all the ingredients.

She and MassageGirl like to send friendly zingers back and forth about their respective foibles.  The most recent exchange that cracked me up went like this.

TG:  I can't cut my apple with a plastic knife!  Where's my good knife?

MG: Why do you need to cut it?  Just bite into it.

TG: I don't like to bite into apples.  I never know what to do with my upper lip.

MG: Gets juice and stuff in your moustache, huh?

Later on in the same day a patient came in and shared a bit of wisdom with us.  "Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may burn your ass tomorrow."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now it's your turn to share.
What weird food habits do you have?
What food is life like in your opinion?  And no, you may not say it's like a box of chocolates.
This is easy, I like to mash and then mix my fried eggs into grits for breakfast. Now, as my grandfather taught me, the yokes cannot be overcooked, they have to be runny giving the grits a yellowish tint.
I did this once in a IHOP and a nice lady saw me do this and about puked.
I can't stand the hard 'skin' on anything. I peel most fruits because of this. If I try to eat a grape tomato, I chew it and then spit out the skin. Don't get me started on the white membrane inside an orange....
My wife has "apple issues" also. Won't bite one. It has to be sliced. Also tossed with lemon juice if it's going to sit for, oh, say, more than 30 seconds. Brown spots are not allowed.
I will eat just about anything. The list of things I've tried and found, if nothing else, reasonably ok is long and scary: alligator, octopus, tripe, brains, giant clam, sea urchins... the list goes on.
I'm thinking of "Willy" from the Simpsons? Git yer haggis! Right here! Chopped heart and lungs... boiled in a real sheep's stomach! Tastes as guid as it sounds!"
In keeping with your post, perhaps life is a bit like trail mix: a lot of fruits and nuts out there, and some hard things you have to go through to get to the sweet bits.
Works for me this a.m.
Your patient is right, life is a jar of jalapeno peppers.
I usually skip breakfast because I can't eat on an empty stomach. But that's not weird, is it?
Well, of course, there's the old classic that life is like a shit sandwich - the more bread you have , the easier it is to swallow. . . But, you know, if I actually subscribed to that, I'd be in trouble. . .
I dunno, I'll pretty much eat anything. When I was a kid, sauerkraut used to make me puke, but I like it fine now. . .
I do have a certain predilection, tho, for mixing foods on my plate. Jen makes a ginger salmon recipe that she always serves with coleslaw, and I invariably stir them together into a salmon-slaw mishmash. And sometimes for breakfast, she'll serve up tabouli and cottage cheese, and that all gets mixed together, too. . .
Hot milk, or anything made with hot milk - just thinking about the skin makes...oh excuse me please....
Bloody hell I wish my life could be as problem free as that. I just got diagnosed mentally ill by the way. I have bipolar+. You asked about food habits: well I used to like eating shepherd's pie with chopsticks, I suppose that counts as eccentric!
A coworker today mentioned she only eats one food at a time on her plate. Her little girl is the same so perhaps it is genetic.
My weirdest food issue is eating the exact same thing over and over again, and sometimes only eatingwhat I am craving. But that is usually when I am feeling stressed.
Cooked mushrooms give me the heebies. Ditto anything of a pudding-like consistency. And I can't bear the taste of cilantro.
What food is like life?...For me it's my local sushi-go-round. The darned thing never stops moving long enough to take a break and in the end you realize it's all basically the same thing over and over again with slight variations on the toppings. ;)
I rarely eat anything warmed up. Cold out of the refrigerator is just fine.
1. The smell of cooking mushrooms makes me gag.
2. I like to eat my food so I chew half on the left and half on the right side of my mouth.
I like peanut butter and brown sugar sandwiches.
I feel so guilty about it, too.
I don't know what food reminds me of life, but I do know that life is too short to eat bad food. If you are fortunate enough to be able to afford good food (I mean like fresh produce, which is cost prohibitive for some folks), you really ought to learn how to prepare it, and treat yourself to deliciousness.
I hold that truth to be self evident.
When I was a kid, I felt I had to take turns taking bites of each food on my plate, in systematic order. I was much thinner then.
Life is like...a bagel? No, I don't want there to be a hole in the middle. PLEASE NO. Don't let life be like a bagel.
