All I Really Want

Alanis Morissette - All I Really Want

Do I stress you out
My sweater is on backwards and inside out
And you say how appropriate
I don't want to dissect everything today
I don't mean to pick you apart you see
But I can't help it
There I go jumping before the gunshot has gone off
Slap me with a splintered ruler
And it would knock me to the floor if I wasn't there already
If only I could hunt the hunter

And all I really want is some patience
A way to calm the angry voice
And all I really want is deliverance
Do I wear you out
You must wonder why I'm so relentless and all strung out
I'm consumed by the chill of solitary
I'm like Estella
I like to reel it in and then spit it out
I'm frustrated by your apathy
And I am frightened by the corrupted ways of this land
If only I could meet the Maker

And I am fascinated by the spiritual man
I am humbled by his humble nature
What I wouldn't give to find a soulmate
Someone else to catch this drift
And what I wouldn't give to meet a kindred
Enough about me, let's talk about you for a minute
Enough about you, let's talk about life for a while
The conflicts, the craziness and the sound of pretenses
Falling all around...all around
Why are you so petrified of silence
Here can you handle this?

Did you think about your bills, your ex, your deadlines
Or when you think you're gonna die
Or did you long for the next distraction
And all I need now is intellectual intercourse
A soul to dig the hole much deeper
And I have no concept of time other than it is flying
If only I could kill the killer

All I really want is some peace man
a place to find a common ground
And all I really want is a wavelength
All I really want is some comfort
A way to get my hands untied
And all I really want is some justice...

Lotta stuff here, my friend. . . And I'm wondering if, and how, and to what extent, it's expressive of your own soul. . . (But Alanis expresses the whole 'alienation' thing very poignantly, doesn't she?)

My man CS Lewis would say that it's exactly that sense of yearning, of 'I don't quite fit here', or 'I don't feel at home', that's meant to point us toward Heaven

Know the feeling very well, there are times I just want to say the heck with it all. During these times all sorts of escapes drift between the shoddy synapses in my brain but a favorite right now is the one where I buy a small sailboat.

It was be around 18-foot but have a small cabin with a bunk. While I would not try an ocean crossing I would head out on the inter-coastal waterway which stretches from Maine to Brownsville, Texas.

She gives me a headache. Maybe she could write a song about that!

So much to say...

1) I think it's cool to wear my sweater inside out and backwards. People call me Fr. Craver on account of the tag.

2) Is there anything so frustrating as apathy? Not much.

3) The only thing that would be more cool than a stage painted to look like a Persian rug is if the stage actually was a rug. (Having been a sound tech, I appreciate how some well placed carpeting cuts acoustic resonance.) As much as she moves though, it would probably generate enough static to power one or two guitar amplifiers. bzzzzt!!

4) Did you know that she married a rapper? What's up wit dat, yo?

I love it when people's words help us vent. May this blow off enough steam for you to regroup and handle some more.

Or, you know, the exact opposite: to make it change.

There is something about her voice that rubs me the wrong way. But I get that from Bob Dylan too. Its their voices, not what they say. Both are poets. The words I do like.
I'm weird. I know.
