Friday 55-Bon Apetit!

FRIDAY 55

A stench creeps down the hallway,
sneaks into my room,
reaches up to my nose,
and burrows into my head
before diving to my stomach
causing me to gag.

What IS it?
Roasted sweat socks?
Spicy sewage soup?
Skunk souffle?
Bloated roadkill ragout?
Boiled diapers?
Creamy compost casserole?

Pity the children...
It's the school lunch.

Well you can thank our intrusive government for that one. When I worked in the school cafeteria in the late nineties, the food was good, albeit greasy sometimes, but the kids actually ATE something and didn't just waste food and money by getting a lunch they tossed in the trash. That started happening after the government started limiting how much fat we could serve...that meant we couldn't serve taco salad, which the kids LOVED and we sold HUNDREDS everyday!!!!! They also loved the french fries. Now, the kids were skinny as bean poles...there might have been 10 overweight kids in the entire school (jr. high...8th and 9th grade) becaue peir pressure made them WANT to lose weight...and wanting to attract the opposite sex. The government didn't have to step in and tell us we couldn't sell them a bag of chips or candy bars! These kids needed some sort of nutrition, and once they dictated what we could serve (or lose government money), the kids quit eating in the cafeteria, or if they were on subsidized lunches, they just tossed them after lookin at them for 30 minutes! Whew, sorry...I'll step down from my soap box now.

Or, as is the case @ my daughter's school (15, a sophomore)... they are *required* to take a tray/plate with the hot lunch, to have the daily selection of mushy overcooked mystery vegetables... which promptly gets tossed in the garbage.

She and most of her peers then proceed directly to the fresh vegetables, and eat that from the salad bar... naturally, this is seen as sensible, to someone.

She asked just last night, "Why would they force us to take one disgusting form of vegetable, instead of just putting the options nearby- then they could *see* we're all taking some, and not assume that we won't if they don't make us have mush?"

I grew up dirt poor (in the 70's and 80's)but school lunches back then were awesome. Was it because it beat what I was (not) having at home? Or just that it was packed full of fat and salt and sugar?
Yes to it all, I guess!

Hilarious, Lime! As are the comments! We had some great school lunches and some crappy ones. My kids say it's the same today. As the chef in my household, I know you can never please everyone.

There is a certain icky-ness to school lunch, like they store the food in musty closets the cook the food in rusty pots.

I briefly worked in a school kitchen
and was NOT impressed- however the chef thought she was Gods gift- you get my drift... thanks!

You made me laugh, even though I don't remember school lunches being all that bad.

Aw, c'mon....it can't be that bad! But I don't know....it's been a while since I had little ones in school. Personally, I'm sick of roadkill!

Eww. Yuck.

I think my kids are pretty lucky. Most days I pack their lunches but there are times when they BEG to have the school lunch. They are usually pretty tasty.

I remember when school dinners were made from scratch. Now they serve up burgers labelled "100% beef" which are in fact horse meat. I kid you not. It's a national scandal here in England at the moment.

Hahaha! Oh yeah - I used to love to hate school lunch! We used to have contests to see who could gross out the most people with the way we described 'hot lunch' and I almost always won. But now I bow to the master! Very funny 55!

Interesting Michelle. Didn't Jamie Oliver the British chef do ANYTHING for your state schools? :-) - Dave
