Back to School

It is 6:21am and Diana and Calypso are already on the bus. How obscene. We are back to school today. My children are less than thrilled for not only the traditional reasons. Diana is a senior this year and is particularly unhappy because our public school has opted to start requiring uniforms. They didn't notify retailers early enough to insure a decent stock available for purchase. It's been less than fun trying to even find stores carrying the required garb. Isaac, doesn't much care about the policy. Calypso is horrified about the lack of trendiness but sees the lack of time she'll need deciding what to wear as more time she can spend either in bed or fussing over hair and makeup. Diana is in a fury.

Since she is a senior there is some sense of pressure about her future career plans for the sake of declaring a major when she applies to various colleges and universities. She is struggling to decide between nursing and education. I think there is a very natural third option, which she is overlooking. Tell me if you disagree.

Shortly after the uniform code was announced she told me. "I have read the policy front to back. There is nothing in it that specifically prohibits me from wearing my uniform inside out. I'll be doing that in protest of this idiocy."

I'm a bit shocked that she has never considered the legal profession.

uniforms in senior year??? oh. no fair. you can't pull that rule out at the last minute. i love Diana's protest. i wish i would have thought of that back when i was in high school

I always thought Diana would make a darned good lawyer! ( at first I was afraid that you might be suggesting marriage as a third option & I was horrified!)

Uniforms are okay, in that that, it will not be easy for the children to sneak out during the school hours to buy beer ( like G did) they will be easily recognized everywhere & they could run the risk of being reported.
Then when the small kids go out on an excursion, the uniform will make it easy to keep an eye on them & prevent their getting lost!

Again, it is a best leveler. Once they have a uniform, no body will be able to boast of riches & no one will have an inferiority complex!

Oh, yeah... she should definately consier the legal profession. :D That sucks about the uniforms. I fear that will be a nation wide trend before much longer...

I love the protest as well. What a wonderful thing. I think Diana needs to keep in mind that a lot of people that enter college come out with a totally different degree than what they were starting out for. That is probably why all the base requirements are first so you do not lose everything if you switch majors.

Gee, I was enjoying the summer. I guess I best be careful on my drive into work past 5 schools. I should wave at the police officer as I pass them while they try and keep the kids safe going to school.

Happy first day ... well, not 6:21am. I think that should be considered yesterday.

Erynn had her own way of protesting the uniform rule:
She made sure her pants were juusst short enough to see her socks. And then, she found the most outrageous socks, and often mismatched them. Drove the admin. nuts, but there was nothing in the rules....

from one angle I like the uniform idea and I am sure that it will be a new rule here soon because they have talked about it for a while now.

She should definitely go for the legal profession.

Have a good day!

When I was in jr high and high school, they didnt make PE uniforms in my size, so that was nicely embarrassing that I had to have special permission to just wear a white tshirt and blue shorts bought in the little girls department.
My mom said, "So what? I have to buy my clothes there too!"
Now I get to shop in the womens department but my mother still has to shop in girls. HEE HEE HEE!

Oh I do hope she wears it inside out, will you keep us informed?

I hqave mixed feelings about uniforms because I hate rules, but I also think they are sorta cute. Did they say anything in the rules about shortening the little plaid skirt to about 12" and then wearing it with black stockings? Ok OK I know, thats a bit over the top for high school, but...he he, everyone knows the schoolgirl uniform is all about sexy thanks to young Britney in the 90's.

You know, it could actually cause LOTS AND LOTS of problems, that plaid uniform and white shirt. SO...

In the store we now have these choices for our girls.....
Butt crack jeans
Skinnies (can you even get your arm in them, let alone a thigh?)
Plaid schoolgirl kinkwear
PINK Stuff

And that, my friends, is about it.
Ok
I cant beeleeeve they have to get on the bus at 6:20...insane. What time does school start?

i like diana's thinking! :)

there is a big debate going on in our community forum about whether our schools (we have two k-8) should have uniforms. those for it claim that it helps to keep focus on learning and clothes won't distract, help w gangs, drugs and other dumb crap like that that NO uniform is going to solve. we don't have any need for them really. just some parents who are a bit pissy cuz the schools aren't cracking down as hard as they want them to for those who violate school dress code. we have one of the top 10 schools in the county, our test scores are high, so i don't think kids are getting distracted by clothes. my thing is, 'if ain't broke, don't fix it.'

Strangely enough I quite enjoyed my school uniform when I was going to school. (All white... quite smart and easy to shop for.) We also had to wear little pin badges... yeah, I know... how very British.

I appreciated the fact that it (the uniform) instantly equalized the "haves" and the "have nots" as my public school (that was run by the La Salle brothers) educated the Prime Minister's and Fish Monger's son... and everyone in-between. (yeah, an all boy's school at that.)

Anytime someone fervently argues that it kills individuality and creativity... I point to myself. Though tell Clypso and Issac that the trick is in "accessorizing"... LOL... yeah, I did that too.

You know ME. I would join her in that protest in a heartbeat. Good for her!

By the way - 6:21am? What in heck is up with that? What time does school begin?

Our school district is "considering" the uniform thing and I pray to God my last two have graduated by then. It irks me that the school is forced into the role of parents yet again. If more parents would enforce the dress code rules AND just say NO to all the label crap, we wouldn't be in this situation. But I digress.....

I thought you were going to suggest fashion merchandising as a career. Legal Eagle is good too!

And my two high schoolers leave the house at 6:30 a.m. - NOT happy campers.

Is Diana going to let her classmates in on her plan ahead of time? Perhaps she can become a "community organizer" and maybe run for president of these United States in 30 years or so.

I would say definitely nursing with a minor in either economics or history. Senior year is not too late to decide to go to law school and she should know by then whether nursing is for her. Medical knowledge is ever more valuable for lawyers, so her years will not be wasted.

I would love to have uniforms at our school. Trying to control the things kids wear is practically a full-time job.

I like Diana's thinking. Very creative.

LMAO!!! Brillant!!!!!!!!!! And yes, a lawyer (maybe in contract law) would be a perfect fit! :)

I have no doubt that Diana would excel in whatever profession she chooses. Such out of the box thinking suggesting that she might wear the uniform inside out is original and shows a willingness to defy the common mindset. Any of the three professions are honorable with a possible hybrid of medical law that would cover the medical field and justice.

Just now back to school? I'm mixed about the whole uniform thing. It blows my mind what some parents let their kids wear to school, and astounds me further that the schools don't insist on some degree of decency in dress. I'm not sure uniforms are the answer, but the system as it is isn't working well, either.

Gee...I wonder where she gets THAT way of thinking from....

One of my fave teacher-moments last year involved a student who showed up in ripped fishnet pantyhose, a skirt that BARELY covered her bum and a top that didn't cover her bodacious....um, assets, and 3" stripper shoes. We called mom to come down (as this was the 3rd dress code violation), and
yup, you betcha.
Mom showed up in an outfit just as outrageous, hollering about "What did we know about fashion?"

Oh, and the kicker? I teach 7th grade.

HA! My youngest daughter used to [and still does] wear her shirts inside out lol.... Tell the kiddo that claiming a major the first 2 years isn't nessacerry.. get the core classes out of the way first and find her nitch!

I reserve the right to be more interesting than my clothes.

Just because something is not specifically prohibited does not mean it is acceptable. I hope she considers whether that's really a battle she wants to choose.
