Surprise

Well, If you were here last week you know I was somewhat less than pleased that Mr. Lime let my 40th birthday pass by with no more acknowledgment than a card and two boxes of Count Chocula, and a really crappy mood from the husband. Now money is tight so I kept my expectations low...card, cake, a nice dinner I didn't have to cook or clean up after....heck, I'd have settled for spaghetti sauce and noodles out of the pantry that he cooked and cleaned up after so long as it was served with some love. I was less than pleased that Mr. Lime effortlessly limboed right under even those low expectations. More than a couple of you seemed to express a willingness to exact revenge on my behalf. I was nearly ready to consider the various offers made.

Well, I must say I was taken entirely by surprise on Friday night when 14 people showed up at my house for a party. First I caught Mr. Lime sneaking this cake into the house. I will admit I was still not suspecting a party. I was still irked enough to figure it was a sad, day late and dollar short attempt to assuage his own guilt....even though it was a tie dyed cake. Cool huh? Who knew they could tie dye a cake?

Then my mom and stepdad showed up, which didn't really surprise me since she said she wanted to come up anyway to bring some video she took of the homecoming floats from the previous week. Next, I heard my dad and stepmom's voices. They showed up in some tie dye I had made for my stepmom. I had to document that my dad actually was willing to wear this for my benefit. See how happy he is about it?

Eventually, 10 other people showed up but the last to arrive really shocked me and just about made me spill tears. It was my best friend who lives kind of far away. She turns 40 next month and she is pregnant with her first baby. I haven't seen her since before she got pregnant and now she is all round and cute.

So there were several funny gifts implying that decrepitude is upon me. You will have to come back for Thursday's Slice of Lime to see the one which both made me laugh the hardest and made my children flee in horror. I also got some nice things including a 5 pound Hershey's bar which included a "golden ticket" to this place. Uh, yeah, never expected that one. So it looks like I will be crossing #33 on this list. I'll let you all know how that goes. Woohoo!

The guests were a bit horrified to find out he had let me stew all week but in the end he did well.

Oh I am so happy to hear how things turned out and sorry you had to go through your birthday more or less being forgoten in the first place. I doubt you could throw this together that fast with the tie dye cake and the candybar that soon so it looks like it was already in the planning but ... Like I said, glad it turned out so wonderful. I look forward to your slice of Lime.

I love the picture of you and your friend ... ooh and your pregnant friend too. Great pictures and very nice story.

That last photo is the picture of joy! If you look that happy holding a big Hershey bar, I cannot imagine how radiant you will be after bathing in chocolate at the chocolate spa.

Your husband is quite the trickster. And I love the tie-dyed cake and tie-dyed relatives. HAPPY HAPPY 40th! (And happy pregnancy to your friend.)

Glad he had something up his sleeve for you!

I'm sure you'll have a blast at the chocolate spa. Though they may have to drag you away kicking and screaming. haha!

Hubbies are sneaky creatures (at least I was when I had hubby status)... and in this instance in a good way. :)

Cheers on him coming through!

Oh yeah for sneaky hubby! What a relief that he really isn't a completely uncaring fool! Whew!

What a lovely, lovely party he threw for you. Complete with a tie-dyed cake and everything! Wow! You lucky lady!

Uh, oh...how many "I wish I didn't say that" moments did you have while stewing all week?

I threw The Missus a big one for her 50th. After that, I'm going for the spaghetti sauce and noodles.

fred, my step mother is the only one at the party to whom i ranted, and that was done privately. i didn't say anything to mr. lime that should regret. i was afraid to open my mouth for fear of shredding him mercilessly.

He not only saved his butt, he coated it in gold.

Or something. At any rate, I'm lowering my fists toward him now. He is awesome, particularly for the best friend touch.

You got Count Chocula? I'm SO jealous... they're munch, crunchy chocolaty...oh wait, that's Cocoa Puffs. Still...lucky.

PRetty doggone cool, if you ask me!
My kids planned a surprise get-together for me for my 60th birthday (4 years ago) but the younger daughter ended up telling me about the plans beforehand because she was getting worried that I was going to screw things up for the plans they had made to get me out of the house to do the party. So, I was under orders from her to go with the older daughter, behave, do as older daughter said, etc., and upon coming home, to make sure to act really surprised. It was nice to know they wanted to do something that unexpected for me and I obeyed the younger girl's orders so as not to ruin things for them. COngrats, Happy Birthday a bit late and all that!
