Trini Tuesday-I Think I Need a Vacation

After the last few days I'd like to make a little escape. Finances and schedules being what they are it's not too likely I'll make one to Trinidad any time soon but I thought I'd go back to some of the previously unseen slides I was able to scan so we can take a trip to the beach together. I've posted about Maracas Bay and Toco Beach before. Even if you don't want to read the text, I hope you'll enjoy the pictures. Today's are from Toco.

Our dear friends (We'll call them Ren and Flora) on the island introduced us to Toco. Ren used to work there so he knew all the secret places. Toco quickly became a favorite spot for me because it was entirely undeveloped and raw. Very few people bothered to make the trek unless they were local because it was so far out of the way and not at all easy to access. There was also a neat little lagoon behind the beach, which gave it a remote feel to me.

Flora and me. Flora liked this picture because it was one of the few we had together but she was slightly annoyed because it makes me look taller than she is, which is definitely not the case. She made me promise any time I showed it to people I'd explain she was standing in a hole when the picture was taken. I am keeping my promise, Flora.

Here Flora and two of her girls are fighting the sideways current. Yes, sideways. Toco is at the northeast point of Trinidad so the water flows down the east coast and across the north coast. that sideways current is far more powerful than any undertow. In fact, there are few waves and very little undertow at Toco.

Toco also has some very rocky sections. It's fun to leapfrog around the big rocks during low tide or just sit on them and watch fish in the little tide pools.

Here are a couple other pictures I like that aren't from Toco. This is from Maracas Bay and I just liked the muted colors in it. Maracas is on the north coast where the mountains descend dramatically to the sea.

Leaving Trinidad completely, here's a shot of Pigeon Point, Tobago. Tobago is the sister island in the republic of Trinidad & Tobago. It's a far more touristy place than Trinidad is and beautiful in its own way. I've only ever been there once but I liked the way the silhouette of the roofed pier came out so I am posting it now.

Aaaaaah, I needed that. Thanks for coming along. I hope you enjoyed it too.

I know people associate the Carribbean with luxury holidays (certainly on this side of the Atlantic they do)... but is it possible to go backpacking out there? Surely on Jamaica and the bigger islands there must be a wealth of "budget" options for the more intrepid traveller...
Just an idea for times future.
PS the slides are lovely :-)

cocotte, glad you enjoyed

gledwood. i don't know what sorts of backpacking adventures are available but i know there are small guesthouses all over the island. they are far cheaper than the big hotels because they are geared to be affordable for locals. they tend to be fairly rustic but you can get some incredible meals at them.

(*sigh*) Very nice; and now I'm wishing for a beach vacation of my own. . .

I'm familiar with those 'sideways currents'. There are certain spots in the Great Lakes where they are quite pronounced (the Great Lakes can be understood, from a certain perspective, as just really wide parts of the St. Lawrence River).

I recall one time, we were at Grand Bend, Ontario (where Lake Huron starts narrowing down near its southern end, on it way toward the St. Clair River at Port Huron), and after splashing around for 5-10 minutes, we noticed we were nearly a quarter-mile down the beach from where we started. . .

And you know, I just looked at a map; I never realized how close you were to the South American continent. . .

Very nice. I sure would love some of that outside my window about now. Rain, again. Cellar is flooding, again. I'd love some wetness that comes packaged with sand and sunshine and smiling faces.

I needed that too. I know I am going to live somewhere tropical someday....

Thanks for taking us along!

Trinidad is a beautiful island, but some things have changed in the last few years, and one of them is that it now has one of the highest crime rates in the world.

Just a word of advice from someone who has been living there for many years, don't even think about back-packing there or any of the other islands, it is far too dangerous. Even doing things mentioned by lime e.g. travelling in maxi-taxi's are no longer recommended.

(breathing in deeply) Aaaah, I smell sun tan lotion. Thanks for the trip.

We've got a high of 64 today and it's partly cloudy. That ain't half bad. I went out at lunch to snap a few macros of wildflowers.

Thats the lovely thing about blogsphere: a nice story with a personal touch (like yours always are!), some good pics and a bit of imaginations - then you are at places which are sooooo exotic to a Norwegian - thanks for taking us with!

Btw: Sorry I haven't been around that much lately as I am very busy at work and also make the best plan for the Oslo Blog Gathering (we will miss you!).

Thank you for the tropical get away. I'm still stuffy with my spring cold and the pictures were a nice distraction.
