Isaac is a 15 year old boy.  He also happens to be over 6 feet tall and still growing.  This means he is a bottomless pit. He frequently downs and entire gallon of milk in a single day and yet remains trim.  I have been considering a home equity loan to finance next month's grocery bill.  The boy has always had a hearty appetite and it has only grown along with him.

One might be inclined to think a creature who is so consistently hungry would be somewhat less inclined to worry about presentation or variety in favor of sheer volume and accessibility.  On many days this is true but Isaac also exhibits a bit of whimsy and adventure in his culinary drives from time to time.  He was excited to show us all his creatively arranged sloppy joe, beans, and mac & cheese not long ago and made sure we appreciated how his dinner was smiling at him.  He has also begun experimenting with his favorite snack/dessert/side dish/breakfast/lunch/dinner item....the peanut butter sandwich.

You may immediately think of peanut butter and grape jelly on two slices of white bread.  I'm here to tell you no such creature will be found in this house. Yuck!  First of all, I don't buy white bread, much to the consternation of certain members of this family.  Second, grape jelly seems to be the least favorite flavor of anyone here.

I long ago introduced the limelets to the wonders of a fluffer nutter (peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich).  This was such a hit that sometimes certain individuals will forgo the bread and just stir the PB & fluff together in a bowl.  No comment on who may have made that original suggestion...

I'm also a fan of peanut butter and apple butter or peanut butter and honey sandwiches on some nice whole grain bread.

Calypso, being an Elvis fan, has done the bacon and banana version.

Mr. Lime hipped Isaac to the idea of PB&J on pumpernickel bread.

Then Isaac came home with a menu from some place in NYC that specializes in peanut butter sandwiches and decided he needed to eat his way through the menu.  This led to peanut butter and pickle sandwiches, peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches laced with shredded coconut, as well as some other concoctions I can't even remember.

So now I invite you to share the most interesting, oddest, or yummiest (if unconventional) peanut butter sandwich recipe you personally favor.  PB sandwiches are a nice cheap filler for a perpetually hungry teenage boy.  If you can't give me any good sandwich ideas how about the name of a good loan officer?

You gotta love creative food.

An old favourite (from when I was young and skinny) was whole grain bread, peanut butter, honey, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and raisins. This could explain why I'm no longer skinny.

Now I just dab a bit of peanut butter on apple slices.

At our house peanut butter is a favorite too. We have one that loves peanut butter and banana sandwiches grilled or just on plain bread. We have one that likes peanut butter and cheese..I can't say if this is good or not because I haven't tried it. I have one that dips his pizza crust into peanut butter. We also eat grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and I must say they are good. I personally like all natural peanut butter on whole grain bread that has been toasted.

I make them homemade peanut butter and jelly poptarts which don't last longer than a day at our house. I also make peanut butter and jeally wontons and they are so good it's hard to stop eating them. It has been requested for me to make a peanut butter and jelly pizza the next time I make pizza...I just might have to try this. :)

Good luck with getting a loan...I survived 2 boys that I thought were going to eat me out of my home. :)

Peanut butter and jelly is not a popular combination here. When I was a teenager we had hens and always a drum of wheat in the shed to feed them. One day my Mum became ill and a friend, a retired nurse came to look after her. As I had a big appetite the 'nurse' used to get a bowl of wheat, soak it in warm water over night and boil it up the next day and serve it to me with custard as an after-school snack. It was GREAT, and really filled the gap. It tasted like that puffed wheat you can buy as breakfast cereal, but moist and chewie. - Dave

No one really likes peanut butter sandwiches here. It's grilled cheese combos for my son.

White bread is an abomination. Give me the whole-grain, multi-grain stuff that scours out yer digestive tract as it passes thru ya. . .

We also only get the natural PB that you have to stir before you spread it, to mix the oil back into the peanut-stuff (altho my kids will occasionally go to great lengths to sneak 'crisco peanut butter' into the house. . .) And the 'spreadable fruit', rather than jelly or jam (sugar doesn't treat us kindly; tho I'll refrain from getting in anyone's grill about the marshmallow fluff. . .)

(*ahem*)

We've done PB& honey, PB& banana (with or without lettuce), PB& apple slices (and, as Hilary notes, you really don't need the bread - just dip the apples into the PB). Also 'Ants on a Log' - PB& raisins on a celery stick. 'Course our kids will often as not just take it simple - just grab a spoon and eat the PB by the spoonful. . .

And boy, do I understand about the teenage boys. . . When 4M was the captain of his HS football team, he used to bring some of his teammates over after the games, and they would go thru boxes of Cheerio's. The team wasn't very good (alas), and one time Jen told the guys that, if they won, she'd make 'em pancakes for breakfast. When they finally did win, we had 30 football players over for breakfast, and they went thru two giant boxes of Bisquick - probably upwards of 300 pancakes. . .

You also remind me of a scene from the old Andy Griffith Show that has been stuck in my mind since I was a kid: Andy and Goober are in the diner at Mt. Pilot, and Goober ordered a Peanut Butter and Tuna Fish Sandwich. When the waitress brought it to him (with the required look of disgust on her face), he peeled up the top slice and complained, "You didn't put any ketchup on it!"

Having been a bottomless pit at one time, I empathize with both you and Isaac. I used to go to a local Italian restaurant with my buddies from a band, and I'd down, by myself, an entire large pizza, a huge bowl of spaghetti with meat sauce, two ginormous cups of soda, and as much bread and butter as they were willing to bring to the table. And I only weighed about 150 until late into my 20's. Now I weigh 185 and I eat three slices and feel like I swallowed an anvil.

My fave PB dish is PB and saltines (or, for a change of pace, Ritz) along with a glass of chocolate milk. I do enjoy a PB&J, but my J of choice is strawberry jam. Pumpernickel is good, but seeded rye bread is better (I recommend Pepperidge Farm, if you have it there. They call it "Jewish Rye", though I haven't noticed the loaf missing its tip or anything.)

Have you made the kid some peanut butter cookies? Loved 'em when I was a boy.

Finally, I'm glad to hear of someone outside of New England who enjoys The Fluffernutter. It's always been somewhat of a regional sandwich. Just last year, I got a co-worker originally from Indiana to try one. I'm sorry to say it did not send him into paroxysms of joy. Midwestern Heathen.

Heh, heh. Also a big fan of the fluffernutter (pre-Atkins). Sadly, I can't eat the fluff anymore, but the right pb is still ok.

For a couple of years I lived right around the corner from the Teddie PB factory. When the wind was right, the neighborhood reeked of roasted peanuts. Many, many sandwiches were consumed. The cravings were almost insatiable.

Strangest pb I've made and enjoyed: mix a bit of thai curry sauce into the pb, spread on bread of choice, add thin sliced chicken and thin sliced apple... kind of a satay sandwich.

You also remind me of this. Yeah, I know, pretty spammish, but we received some of this stuff as a gift, some years back, and it is amazing stuff. Pricey, to be sure, but for a once-in-a-blue-moon splurge. . .

My favorite is peanut butter plus anything! Especially JIF.

I have only eaten two of those elvis sandwiches in my life, and I think it cut my life span by about ten years. Totally worth it!

When I was little, I'd stack unsalted crackers with PB between, dunk the whole thing in coffee, and eat it up like oatmeal. I tried it once in front of my wife and kids, and they gagged. Ah, they don't know what they're missing.

Just stick some chips in there somewhere. That's all I've got. Plus, a raging desire for good peanut butter. And whole wheat bread.

Thanks a lot.

I only buy whole grain bread, too. My favorite peanut butter sandwich, has PB, mashed banana, a little honey and some cinnamon. Mmmm.

When I was growing up, my dad introduced me to the glory and deliciousness that is a peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwich. I know...it sounds gross, but trust me. It's delicious. Crunchy peanut butter. Tangy Miracle Whip. It works. I'd not had one in years and years...then the other day, I had some kind of weird sandwich making mishap while packing my lunch for work, and ended up making myself this treat. I can't tell you how I looked forward to lunch that day!

However, I can't eat something like that every day - and on this new lifestyle plan I'm on, the amount of peanut butter I'm eating is WAAAAAAAAYYYY cut back from how I used to down it in the old days, but when I want a treat, I'll make a peanut butter and lettuce sandwich. DELICIOUS! Has to be iceburg, and it has to be the crunchier, inside leaves, but trust me, it works.

OK Hannah is 5'7" and 100 pounds. She eats about 3000 calories a day. She cannot gain an ounce....it is so expensive to feed her and then see her not get any meat on her bones!

So, I know what you mean. I have started making my own bread, because she will eat an entire loaf of bread with butter after school and not get fat! She doesnt even do sports.

(Gary was exactly the same until 35, he was 6', 150 pounds LOL)

SO, yeah, I make bread, its fresh, she eats it all....I use organic flour, bottled water, etc...I also like to make soup, but I like it alot more than she does.

So, how about always having some rice and beans and torts around? And some cheese for quesadillas, and you can even buy tortilla flour, which makes delicious torts, just add water etc and mannn he could eat 20 of those and be all warm and happy inside...

I think Milk is for baby cows, so, I would just take that away and add cheese, greek yogurt etc....BTW Hannah eats tubs of greek yogurt with all the fat too....and she will eat half a watermelon in one sitting!
and, she loves to eat bagels, and crackers and grilled brie sandwiches....
One good thing about having her and Gary eat EVERYTHING is that I cant get fat around here, there is never anything left for me......

OK rice, soup, bread, quesadillas, an entire watermelon even!
:P
I know I went on and on, but ....:P

Peanut butter is far from Kids fav here in Norway, but I propose a sandwich with Peanut Butter and chopped Habaneros. At least it will be unforgetable;-)

PS. Try Uncle Scroogie - he will prevent any financial risks;-)

Mine is a guilty pleasure, but for you, my friend, I will dish: crunchy peanut butter and brown sugar on whole wheat bread. If it isn't homemade whole wheat, then the 7 grain Pepperidge Farm bread with sunflower seeds will do. You gotta have some crunch to offset the crunch of the sugar.
