The Limelette Doesn't Fall Far...

Way back when I was pregnant with Calypso and living in Trinidad I had some pretty horrendous food cravings.  The main ones were for lasagna, broccoli, peanut butter TastyKakes, and Doritos.  I had others from time to time but those items were virtually unavailable at all so they went unsated...and I became a bit crazed at times.  Now you have to understand when I say crazed I mean I was pitifully obsessed.  You need to take just a moment and go read this old post about how those cravings were met.  Its short, I promise.

Ok, now that you're back...

This weekend when Calypso came home (and after we both got to sleep in from the 3am arrival) she let me know she'd had some powerful food cravings while she was in Costa Rica.  First on her list was spaghetti.  I smiled.  Next she said she wanted salad that was made with lettuce instead of cabbage.  Then she told me she was really hoping we could get bagels for breakfast.  Finally, she told me she was absolutely DYING for.....broccoli.

I didn't give her a bouquet but she moaned in delight over the spaghetti dinner with a garden salad heavy on the broccoli that we had Saturday night.

Can sort of relate about being hungry when coming out of the woods.

Its nothing much to speak of these days but while over in West Germany in 1987 I spent a month in the field eating MRE's for lunch and dinner and something greyish brown for breakfast but once we pulled back to the rear I found a tent selling slices of pizza.

Long story short I wasn't the only soldier descending on the place like a hungry locust but I was the only one who dropped his expensive slice onto the dirty cement.

Aside from the extra crunch nature of the slice it was great.

Two wonderful tales! I can understand that craving thing, though I never had that trouble when pregnant. I seem to have them on general principal. =;}

One thing that I really miss about where I grew up... berrocks! They don't have them in this area and though I have searched high and low for some old gal who knows how to make them, alas... none can be found. I have reached the point where I must figure out how to make them myself and just got the recipes for the dough and the filling. Best of all, they are the local ones that I had as a kid. Boy am I looking forward to that.

I can't ever imagine craving broccoli...

I would die if my kids told me they were dying for broccoli!

They say that your body craves the food/nutrients it needs. Can't imagine what would be in a bag of Doritos that could be good for you??

Alas, I have never been far enough afield of where I grew up, for long enough, to really and truly miss those familiar foods. And. . . peanut butter TastyKakes? De gustibus non disputandem, I guess. . .

But. . . no broccoli? Id've thought that was just one of those things that's just available everywhere; who knew?

I remember craving mashed potatoes in Costa Rica. It's kind of hard to make them smooth without a good way to mash them. So I made them once in a blender. They were sort of "glue" texture but still delicious.

But when I came back, I craved shredded cabbage on my sandwiches instead of lettuce. Go figure!

Oh yes, gotta have the broccoli- and I'm not (nor have ever been, nor will be, lol) pregnant; but now, you've instilled a need for broccoli, and there's none in the house.

Thankfully, I don't have to wait for a visit, I can satisfy this craving easily!

Brocoli gives me the wind...

When I was pregnant the first time I had a serious craving for fish sticks (which I'd probably not eaten since elementary school) and watermelon. Apple-anything, on the other hand, made me gag.

Broccoli's good for you. Why not crave it? Not as nice as chocolate though. Maybe your cravings while pregnant with her accounts for that huh? I think you meant that - Dave

My kids would never in a million years ask for broccoli, maybe it's because I had plenty of it when I was pregnant with them. ;)

SEE? It took. All those cravings found root in her! Now: will she still want broccoli in two weeks?
