FRIDAY 55
Will anyone say hello to me?
Will anyone help me if I get lost?
What if I need help with my work?
Will anyone want to sit with me at lunch?
Will they think I am weird?
Make no mistake,
even if you're 44 years old
the first day at a new school
is nerve-wracking.
DA COUNT
After a day of training right before the holiday and another day of training right after, I reported to my own school today for the first time. I forced myself to go have lunch in the faculty lounge even though it would have been easier and more comfortable for me to be a reclusive library aide. It felt awkward but I got through it and one lady came over as I ate my salad and said, "I'm here to ruin your diet," as she offered me some homemade fudge. I accepted gratefully. The secretaries seemed annoyed to have to deal with me at all. The custodian was a very nice man. I share the library at this school with two classrooms and an itinerant teacher, but there is no librarian except for nine weeks sometime later in the year.
It was strange to just be turned loose in the library with no real direction other than, "Here it is, take the first four days to do what you need to get ready." I was grateful for a principal who was generous about time to see the lay of the land and sort out the backlog of things that have been piling up since October when they lost the person I am replacing. All things considered it was a good day.
In four days I get to repeat the process at the other school library I will staff. We'll see how it goes over there.

Excuse me Miss....May I see your hall pass?
Excuse me Ma'am, do you belong in the teacher's lounge?
Excuse me Miss Trini, are Birkenstock Sandals proper attire?
Limey...Loved your 55.
I'm so happy for you I could bust.
Thanks for playing, and have a Kick Ass Week-End
Canasta!!!
How true, this flash. No matter how old we are the first day is nerve wracking. How lovely....to work in a library, any library, anywhere. Good luck.
ah what fun though....i am back teaching this year for the first time in 14 years...its pretty cool to be around the young crowd again...smiles.
Awe! Congrats and I'm sure you will be wonderful!
That does sound like a good first day. These schools are lucky to get you.
The adventure begins. . .
Go get 'em. . .
Congratulations! Oh how I hate first days, but fudge makes it all better. ;-)
I could totally feel your anxiety!! What an awkward trip down memory lane!
Your 55 brought back some memories for me. Its tough being a new kid and because of my mom and dad's behavior there were far more of those times than I liked.
If you really wanted to go retro you would have skipped school the first day!
Oh how I used to love the first day of school, I'm truly not kidding. Good luck and keep us posted.
Always hard to start a new job, especially with little direction like this one seems to be. I'm sure the jitters of the newness of the job and the school will soon fade as you get familiar with it all! Good luck!
betty
How exciting to start a new job! Hope you love it!
secretaries just don't like the extra paperwork .. and how nice was that offer of fudge, you deserve it, its not easy being the new person ..
Ummmm....working with books ....lucky you.
That was supposed 'mmmmm' not um.
Oh yes, this brings back all that anxiety of the first day. I always kept a book with me just in case... Books have always saved me :o) Good 55!
This is so true!
First days are tough. But it sounds like you have a pretty cool job.
God bless the lady with the fudge! As long as you make one or two good friends at any job, it's at least bearable. I have no doubt you'll make many more than that.
You sure can't say that you are over-supervised Michelle, which may be worse than not supervised at all. At least you can set up your own system huh? Good luck to you - Dave.
I am a bundle of nerves when I'm the new person in a room of strangers. Not a fan. I probably would have stayed in the library by myself. I'm antisocial like that sometimes. ;)
Good for you for making yourself be social. I have no doubt that you will have many new friends in no time. :)
I' glad you forced yourself to go into the teacher's lounge the first day. I'd be tempted to hide, too!
All in all, it sounds like a good start.. aside from the secretaries who will hopefully come around. Ms. Fudge sounds like a gem.
