It's possible I may have
underestimated the importance
of having someone with me
when receiving good news.
I knew I'd need you
to break the fall when
I heard the words,
"It's cancer."
Sure as I was
of what would be said,
I still wanted
your hand in mine
and was grateful to feel
your grasp.
I was sure this day would be different
and you had many responsibilities.
You'd done enough.
I didn't want to interfere further.
So I told you to see about your duties,
mine was just a formality.
How foolish I was
in my confidence
of hearing about clean scans.
I learned too late
I needed someone
beside me
bearing witness with me
to the light in the doctor's eyes
when he was a messenger of pardon
rather than execution.
Who knew joy loves company
more than misery does--
or needs it to take up the space
where doubt may try to seat itself?
According to the doctor I saw yesterday the final test confirms I have passed by first full year cancer-free. We are greatly relieved!

Wonderful. . . Just wonderful. . .
Wonderful poetry, even more wonderful news. . .
Joy and long life to you, my friend. . .
It's true, isn't it? Receiving blessed news is multiplied exponentially when someone is at your side.
Congratulations on beating the bastard.
That is good news indeed!
O happy day! So glad to hear your good news!
Can you imagine just how happy I am to read this good news.
Great news. I always go with Mrs. C. to the doctor's office because he can tell her she's cancer free and all she hears is the word "cancer".
My heart rejoices with yours at hearing this wonderful news!
Hooray!!!!!! That is awesome news!!!!!
Yay! I well remember that milestone myself - it's fantastic news.
Oh, yes, yes, yes! So thrilled and wish I could be there to jump up and down in front of you after giving you a big hug. So glad for this diagnosis!!!!
I am so joyful for you and about you, of course, of course, of course!
But the message of this poem--that we need Our People with us even during times of relief and release--is huge, too.
Oh YES, YES, YES!!!!!!
Congratulations on your most fantastic and fabulous and joyous news! We are all here with you celebrating and symbolically holding your hand and jumping up and down. SO happy for you!
And what a beautiful poem. I guess when you have someone you love and trust and is your best friend then you want them with you for all kinds of news. That is a good thing. :)
We'll be with you for all of the anniversaries bearing the same good news. Count on that. Hugs to you, M!
