Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week. ~Spanish Proverb

It's that time of year again. It's time for me to come up with crafts ideas to fill up a week of activities for the 5-8 year olds during Vacation bible School. In spite of my subversive suggestion of having kids make penis gourds, in spite of using dead fish as an artistic medium, and in spite of the great wind spinner disaster of 2008 the organizers of the week keep asking me back. I think they know a cheap deal when they see it. For crying out loud I get a budget of roughly $200 to come up with crafts for 50 kids five days in a row. It's artistic fishes and loaves the way I multiply that little bit to cover the multitudes.

This year I was waaaaay behind the 8 ball. The insanity starts today. I began planning on Thursday. I bought supplies on Friday and Saturday. Sunday night at 7:00 pm I started constructing samples. And what am I doing after midnight instead of getting to bed ASAP to be well rested? I'm sitting here to type up this blog post. Well, I wouldn't want to let that slide now, would I?

Surely you can pull off tie dye again, that's one.
Can't wait to see the results of the week!

I think you should go with the penis gourds myself.

Dang it! Today is one of those days when I regret only having made your acquaintance last year. . .

So, if you and Molly and I ever get to sit down together over a convivial beverage, will you show us your penis gourd? If I say 'pretty please'??

And - 4 bucks per kid for the whole week? That's 'loaves-and-fishes' of a high order, my dear. . .

Good ole VBS! Miss those days. My kids still have many of the crafts that they made over the years. Have fun!

Just thinking about glitter gives me hives. It's not a physical allergy... I just can't stand glitter. Popsicle sticks, paste, and tempera paint are just fine, though.

HAHAHA!!!! That last quote is just too much. hehehe Very funny. :)

Good luck with all the crafties!

Tell the kids to go through mom and dad's bedside table drawers, and whatever they find they can bring in to be painted in bright stripey colors. It will especially fun if what they find either resembles a body part or is used to cover one.

It may not be nice for vacation bible school, but it will probably get you off the hook for next year :-)

Yes...procrastination...the reason I am visiting other people's blogs instead of finishing my own post. ;)

I can't wait to hear what you've come up with for crafts this year!

love the procrastination quotes (-:

thinking back to childhood...my most favorite crafts were...hmmm...i have blocked out the memories. sort of like gym class. i could never followed directions so my crafts were 'unique' aka not successful in the eyes of the teacher.

misticblu, i did tie dye a couple of years ago and it worked well. i just try not to repeat the same thing too often

jazz, custom fitted!

desmond, search my blog for "penis gourd" you should come up with a couple of posts. one where i model it and one where it's hanging on the xmas tree. currently it resides in my dining room. i've considered filling it with dried flowers.

cocotte, aww, how cool that they still have some of their projects.

gman, one day down, 4 to go...

craver, i'm with you on the glitter thing. it's a colossal pain. i tend to avoid it.

kat, i have to admit the last quote was my favorite too

suldog, i have had it suggested that i make condom balloon animals.

s, bra purses! i forgot about them!

mary, i am totally ok with a kid choosing to do his or her own thing with the supplies i give them. they just can't have more than what i give the other kids, but if they want to reconfigure it all...go for it.

I'm hoping I looked sorrowful a couple weeks ago when I was asked if I could volunteer at our church's VBS this week. It's hard to know for sure, because inside, I was jumping up and down and cheering because I couldn't!

Hope it started off well today for you!

Good luck with the crafty kiddies. Surely, up there, you can paint a few pine cones and be done with it...LOL
My middle name is procrastination!
and I surely can relate to the last quote...

Crafts and kids are great fun. It might be a pain in the butt getting organized yet once things get started it's a real blast.

Then again I only deal with around twenty kids. Fifty would make me want to sneak off for a shot or two of whiskey.

LOL@ fish painting. Awesome idea!

secret agent, i actually like that age group. they are enthusiastic and generally cooperative

michelle, it was a pretty funny event

fadkog, and the oscar goes to....

lulda, oddly, i looked for pinecones and couldn't find them

nyd, i think it's actually a japanese thing called giataku? and i don't have 50 all at one shot. it's broken into two groups so it's more manageable.

If you did penis gourds, then the girls could make chastity belts, and that's just good, old-fashioned fun.

You are a hero.
